Neymar sends Brazil into quarters in men's soccer

Manchester, England (Sports Network) - Neymar looked right at home in England.

The 20-year-old sensation scored a stunning free kick and had two assists in a 3-1 win over Belarus on Sunday at Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, as Brazil secured a quarterfinal berth in men's Olympic soccer.

Neymar also scored in the opening game of the tournament for Brazil, a 3-2 win over Egypt in Cardiff, Wales, and added his second goal to seal a comeback win over Belarus.

Bardini Bressan scored early for Belarus, but Alexandre Pato tied the match in the 15th off an assist from Neymar, and the Santos forward added his free kick in the 65th. Neymar hit a right-footed shot from the right into the top left.

Neymar set up the final goal with a brilliant back heel at the top of the area to Oscar, a recent signing for Chelsea. Oscar finished into the top of the net to seal an impressive showing for Brazil, which has never won Olympic gold.

Brazil is comfortably atop Group C on six points. Belarus is second and will seal a quarterfinal spot with a win over Egypt in its final group match.

Mohamed Salah scored in the 40th minute as Egypt tied New Zealand, 1-1, in the other game in Group C at Old Trafford. Chris Wood scored in the 17th minute as New Zealand took the lead, but both sides settled for a point.

Egypt lost to Brazil, 3-2, and New Zealand lost to Belarus, 1-0, in their last matches, but with the draw, both could still advance. New Zealand faces a huge task, as it closes group play against Brazil.

Giovani Dos Santos scored twice in the second half as Mexico beat Gabon, 2-0, at City of Coventry Stadium in Coventry, England to move atop Group B.

Mexico tied its first match with South Korea, 0-0, but Dos Santos came off the bench for the second straight match to spark Mexico and this time also scored.

Oribe Peralta did well to set up Dos Santos at the top of the box in the 63rd, and Dos Santos opened space to send a left-footed shot into the bottom left to open the scoring.

Dos Santos, capped 59 times for the senior Mexican team, scored a penalty kick in extra time to seal the top spot in the group for Mexico. Gabon, which tied Switzerland, 1-1, in its first match, is at the foot of the standings.
